Satakunta Satellite Ospreys

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta in southwestern Finland (Jouko Kivelä, Hannu Pihlasalo, Jaakko Reponen and Raimo Uusitalo) has harnessed breeding ospreys with satellite transmitters from the year 2013. The transmitters are the new age loggers with GPS-GSM technics. They are powered by the solar panel and the weight is 19 grams. The satellite ospreys from southwestern Finland help to understand the behaviour of the birds during their migration and breeding territory. The Satakunta project is one part of the scientific osprey project in the Finnish Museum of Natural History in Helsinki University. The tracking in the Internet aims especially at the osprey auspices.

The main cooperation partners of the project are the community of Siikainen, the enterprise of the nation-wide high-voltage grid Fingrid Oyj, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj, producing nuclear power,  Länsi-Suomen Voima Oy, generating hydropower, the local electricity company Paneliankosken Voima and The Finnish Cultural Foundation (Satakunta Regional Fund).

Neuroliitto is the cooperation partner of the young female bird. That breeding osprey was harnessed in southwestern Finland July 14th 2018.

The working group (Harri Koskinen, Hannu Pihlasalo and Raimo Uusitalo) captured the female satellite Osprey in the 14th July 2018 near her nest in southwestern Finland and the new age GPS-GSM logger fitted at the same time. Neuroliitto named the Satellite Osprey as Iitu. Professor Pertti Saurola ringed the female osprey in the year 2014 as a nestling. The birth territory was situated approximately 150 kilometres southeast from her nest in 2018. The logger for Satellite Osprey Iitu was granted by Neuroliitto.

The female osprey was breeding evidently first time, because it was only 4 years old. Satellite Osprey Iitu has flied her migration routes only few times until harnessing the satellite transmitter.

Iitu was ringed also with a yellow plastic ring with large long-range identification.

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta harnessed the Satellite Osprey pair in Siikainen Finland near their nest in the summer of 2015. Both individuals were ringed also with plastic rings with large long-range identification. Satellite Osprey individuals get the names of their own. The female osprey is Sandra (Santra).  The cooperation partner of Sandra is the community of Siikainen. The satellite transmitter has not worked since August 2017, but Sandra is breeding in Siikainen in 2018.

Samuel MAP

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta captured the male satellite Osprey Samuel in the western coast of Finland 100 meters from the nest and the new age GPS-GSM logger fitted at the same time in the summer of 2014. The male Osprey Samuel was ringed as a nestling in the year 2007 approximately 50 kilometres southwards from his nest in 2014. This satellite Osprey Samuel (Samu) had one nestling in the summer of 2014. Satellite Osprey Samuel´s cooperation partners are Teollisuuden Voima Oyj, producing nuclear power, Länsi-Suomen Voima Oy, generating hydropower and the local electricity company Paneliankosken Voima Oy.

Satellite Osprey Samuel has been breeding in 2015 in the same nest as in 2014. Samuel has observed to fish in his breeding territory in 2016 and in 2017. We have not seen Samuel breeding within two years in the western coast of Finland. He has however migrated without problems many thousand kilometres during his autumn and spring migration. The satellite transmitter has not worked for a long time. We have had no possibilities to change the transmitter to the new logger.

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta captured the male satellite Osprey Lalli  in Kokemäki Finland 100 meters from the nest and the new age GPS-GSM logger fitted at the same time in summer 2013. The male Osprey Lalli was ringed as a nestling in 2007 only 25 kilometres south from his nest in 2013. Osprey Lalli was nesting with an Estonian female osprey (ringed as a nestling in 1999). This osprey pair had two nestlings in summer 2013. The last satellite fixes came in March 31st in the year 2014. There are Lalli observations in the nesting territory afterwards in the year 2015 and 2016. Satellite Osprey Lalli was breeding in 2017 at the same nest as in 2013. He had a new partner. We hope that Lalli will get  the new transmitter in the breeding season 2018. Satellite Osprey Lalli´s cooperation partner is Fingrid Oyj. The company is the enterprise which takes care of the functioning of the nation-wide high-voltage grid. Fingrid Oyj makes sure that Finland obtains electricity without disturbances.

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta captured the Satellite Ospreys near their nests in Northern Satakunta in the summer of 2015.  The male Osprey Ahti was breeding with Satellite Osprey Sandra in Siikainen. Jaakko Reponen ringed Ahti as a nestling in the year 2011.  The logger for Satellite Osprey Ahti was granted by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Satakunta Regional Fund). Ahti perished in September 2016 in the western Italy.

Iida MAP

The working group of the Finnish Osprey Foundation in Satakunta captured the Satellite Ospreys near their nests in Northern Satakunta in Kankaanpää, in the western coast of Finland in the summer of 2015. The female Satellite Osprey named as Iida. The logger for Iida granted the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Satakunta Regional Fund). Iida perished in Chari River in southern Chad in April 2016.
