Notes on the distribution and biology of Larinus sturnus (Schaller)
in Finland (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

[Notes on the distribution and biology of Larinus sturnus (Schaller)
in Finland (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)]. - Sahlbergia 5:9-13.
Only one species of Larinus has been recorded in Finland and
an earlier record on L. planus (F.) is based on misidentification.
L. sturnus (Schaller) was observed living only in inflorescens
of the Melancholy Thistle (Cirsium helenioides, syn. C.
heterophyllum). The distribution of the weevil appeared to be
much wider than previously suspected. The occurrence of the species
should be made by checking the breeding sites rather than by searching
for adult beetles. The present observations suggest considerable annual
variation in abundance of the weevil.
Survey of the tree-living Coleoptera in Herttoniemi manor-park,
southern Finland
Biström, O., Kaila, L. & Kullberg, J. 2000: Herttoniemen
kartanopuiston puukovakuoriaisista (Coleoptera). [Survey of the tree-living
Coleoptera in Herttoniemi manor-park, southern Finland]. - Sahlbergia
5:14-20.
The Coleoptera fauna living in old deciduous trees (elm, linden,
maple, oak, birch) in the old manor-park of Herttoniemi situated in
Helsinki, southern Finland, was surveyed in May-September 1996. Trunk-window-traps,
pitfalls and trunk-pitfalls were used as collecting techniques. In
all, 981 specimens belonging to 117 species were collected. Four nationally
threatened species were recorded, viz. Quedius microps (Gravenhorst)
(Staphylinidae), Eucnemis capucina Ahrens (Eucnemidae), Ampedus
nigroflavus (Goeze) (Elateridae) and Tomoxia bucephala
Costa (Mordellidae).
Macropis europaea Warncke, M. fulvipes (Fabricius) and their
nest parasite Epeoloides coecutiens (Fabricius) in Finland
Pekkarinen, A., Albrecht, A., Teräs, I. & Viitasaari,
M. 2000: Alpimehiläiset ja alpiloismehiläinen Suomessa [Macropis
europaea Warncke, M. fulvipes (Fabricius) and their nest parasite
Epeoloides coecutiens (Fabricius) in Finland] (Hymenoptera:
Apoidea, Melittidae and Anthophoridae). - Sahlbergia 5:21-28.
Diagnostic characters and nesting biology of M. europaea and
M. fulvipes are reviewed. Lysimachia vulgaris is the
only natural pollen and fatty oil plant of these bees in Finland (they
do not visit L. thyrsiflora), while almost 30 plant genera
are recorded as nectar sources. Northernmost records of the two Macropis
species approximately coincide with the limit of 60 % distribution
frequency (weighted proportion of 1 x 1 km squares with records of
all squares investigated) of L. vulgaris in Finland. The flight
period of M. fulvipes is slightly earlier than that of M.
europaea, but large phenological and spatial overlap indicate
competition for pollen and oil resources. The records indicate no
decline of M. fulvipes since 1970, but M. europaea has
possibly declined in the northernmost part of its range already many
decades ago. All records of E. coecutiens in Finland are since
1970.
Records of saproxylic insects (Coleoptera, Heteroptera and Homoptera)
during one-day excursion to Sortavala area (Russian Karelia) in spring
1998
Martikainen, P. & Niemelä, P. 2000: Muistiinpanoja hyönteiskeräysretkeltä
Sortavalan seudun metsiin keväällä 1998. [Records of
saproxylic insects (Coleoptera, Heteroptera and Homoptera) during
one-day excursion to Sortavala area (Russian Karelia) in spring 1998]
- Sahlbergia 5:29-32.
The purpose of excursion was to demonstrate to forestry students
the importance of coarse woody debris and forest structure on insect
biodiversity. In spite of the early season (partial snow cover) altogether
60 forest insect species were recorded. Several species found are
classified as threatened in Finland. At deciduous forest site, e.g.
Drapetes mordelloides (Host), Mycetophagus quadripustulatus
(Linnaeus) and Aradus pictus Bärensprung were recorded.
Corticeus suturalis (Paykull) was found at mixed forest site.
Acanthocinus griseus (Fabricius), Platyrhinus resinosus
(Scopoli), Ampedus suecicus Palm, Aradus pictus, A.
betulinus Fallén and Cixidia sp. were recorded at
site which was burnt and clear cut. The results indicate that especially
those species, which depend on coarse woody debris are still relatively
common in Russian Karelia where forest management has not been as
effective as in Finnish forests.
The mayfly Raptobaetopus tenellus (Albarda) from the Ruunaankoski
rapids of River Lieksanjoki: a second record from Finland
Partanen, A. & Hämäläinen, H. 2000: Vuosurviainen,
Raptobaetopus tenellus (Albarda) Lieksanjoen Ruunaankoskilta
toista kertaa Suomesta. (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae). [The mayfly Raptobaetopus
tenellus (Albarda) from the Ruunaankoski rapids of River Lieksanjoki:
a second record from Finland] - Sahlbergia 5:33-34.
The mayfly Raptobaetopus tenellus is reported for the second
time in Finland and Fennoscandia. The first and only hitherto known
record, dated back to 1904, is from the shore of the river Kokemäenjoki
in western Finland. In July 1999, a nymph of the species was collected
from the river Lieksanjoki in the biological province of Karelia borealis,
eastern Finland.
Maps of the provincial distribution of Neuroptera and Mecoptera
in Finland
Lammes, T. 2000: Suomen verkkosiipisten (Neuroptera) ja kärsäkorentojen
(Mecoptera) eliömaakunnittainen levinneisyys. [Maps of the provincial
distribution of Neuroptera and Mecoptera in Finland] - Sahlbergia
5:35-38.
The distribution of Finnish Neuroptera (63 species) and Mecoptera
(6 species) in biogeographical provinces is mapped. The faunistic
literature including meeting reports dealing with Finnish material
of those orders is listed.
Bembidion azurescens new to Finland
Westman, K, Kaila L., & Kullberg, J. 2000: Bembidion azurescens,
Suomelle uusi maakiitäjäislaji (Coleoptera, Carabidae).
[Bembidion azurescens new to Finland.] - Sahlbergia 5:39.
The ground beetle species Bembidion azurescens (Dalla Torre,
1877) is reported as new to Finland on the basis of some 30 individuals
collected during 1984 - 1986 from a gravel pit in N: Helsinki. The
site is now built and thus destroyed, but the species might still
be found in suitable habitats along the south coast or East Finland.
The weevil Tropiphorus elevatus found in Kuopio (Coleoptera,
Curculionidae)
Biström, O. & Savolainen, E. 2000: Tropiphorus elevatus
-kärsäkäs löydetty Kuopiosta. [The weevil Tropiphorus
elevatus found in Kuopio (Coleoptera, Curculionidae)]. - Sahlbergia
5:40.
A single specimen of the weevil Tropiphorus elevatus (Herbst)
was recorded in Kuopio (Central Finland), the province of Sb (69746:5301,
Grid 27° E). It was captured 11.-17.6.1999 in a window-trap placed
on the ground in a grove with spruce as the dominating tree. This
is by far the northernmost record of the species in Finland.
Notes on hoverfiles during the 20. Finnish Entomological Days at
Jomala on Åland
Bartsch, H. 2000: Blomflugor under 20. finländska entomologidagarna
i Jomala på Åland (Diptera, Syrphidae). [Notes on hoverfiles
during the 20. Finnish Entomological Days at Jomala on Åland].
- Sahlbergia 5:41-45.
71 species of hoverflies (Diptera, Syrpidae) were netted during some
sunny hours during four days in June 1999. Probably 200 species can
easily be retrieved on the Åland islands, and extensive collecting
may give up to 250 species. For some of these species, the Åland
islands are essential for the communication between Finland and Sweden.
The male of Stylops recorded on Andrena lapponica Zetterstedt
(Hymenoptera: Apoidea) in Finland

Vespula germanica found in the winter in southwestern Finland
Johansson, K. & Pekkarinen, A. 2000: Saksanampiainen (Vespula
germanica) löytynyt talvella Turusta (Hymenoptera, Vespidae).
[Vespula germanica found in the winter in southwestern Finland
]. - Sahlbergia 5:49.
A newly dead queen specimen of Vespula germanica (Fabr.) was
found 25.3.1996 outdoors on the snow near the wall of a house of flats
in Turku. An exceptionally early emergence in the spring is typical
for the species and possibly delimitates its distribution in the boreal
area.
