Summary: Abundance of the 58 most common bird species at winter feeding sites in Finland

Risto A. Väisänen 1994: Ruokintapaikkojen lintumäärät talven aikana - 58 lajin yleisyys ja runsaus eri osissa Suomea. Linnut 5/1994 (vol 29), pp. 16-23.

Birds were counted at 280 winter feeding sites by voluntary bird-watchers during 1-6 winters from 1988/89 to 1993/94 (Fig. 1, Table 1). The counting period lasts from 1 October to 15 April, covering 13 two-week periods. For each species, at least the maximum number of individuals observed on the "best day" were reported from each period.

This report summarizes general geographical trends in the presence and abundance of the most common 58 species during the winter. Average abundance of a species per period has been calculated by annually including only such feeding sites in which the species was observed during at least one period. For trends in presence see Table 2; in the Finnish text the species are treated in systematic order and the percentage of sites occupied by the species (annually) is given by codes: F = Finland, E = South Finland, V = Middle Finland and L = Lapland. General abundance is given in Table 2, and in Figures 2-11 species representing different types of variation of abundance during winter are shown.
