Notes on Brachypodium pinnatum

Brachypodium pinnatum (L.) P.Beauv. (Finland, Lammi, Hakkala, 1990). – Image: Harri Harmaja (scanned from dried specimen). – This plant differs from typical B. pinnatum (Poaceae) in that (i) the leaves are stiffer and more erect, (ii) the leaves are blue-green (vs. yellowish green), and (iii) the glumes and the lemma are practically glabrous, only short setae being present in places (vs. more or less distinctly hairy). Two stands of this type were observed in Lammi, in low, fairly eutrophic, grassy rock outcrops accompanied by typical B. pinnatum.
