Notes on Carex spicata

Carex spicata Huds., two morphs from Finland (on the left: Lohja, Seppälä, 1990; on the right: Lohja, Jalassaari, 1990). Image: Harri Harmaja (scanned from dried specimens). – The differences between the morphs are obvious in the image. The morph on the right occurs in places in Lohja while the plant on the left is very infrequent. It is not clear which one represents the "typical" C. spicata (C. contigua Hoppe; Cyperaceae). It may be stated that C. lumnitzeri (Rouy) V.I.Krecz. is a forgotten name which, when mentioned at all, has been considered synonymous with C. spicata. The Seppälä specimen grew in the same ditch which houses Carex hartmanii in its sole locality in the Finnish mainland.
