Notes on Dryopteris sp. 3

Dryopteris sp. (Finland, Nurmijärvi, Perttula, 1998). Image: Harri Harmaja (scanned from dried specimen). The leaf lamina is thick but fairly soft, and its segments are unusually convex. The dried lamina displays three colours: the upper surface has a brownish tinge for the most part, the ultimate segments that are curved downwards are green, and the underside is very pale green. The petiolar scales are few, small, one-coloured. The petiole, lamina below, and margins of indusia are glandular. The sori are poorly developed, scantily present in a few upper pinnae. The habitat is a cut area with luxuriant growth (previous grass-herb woods), accompanying species include Actaea spicata, Brachypodium pinnatum, Dryopteris expansa, Pulmonaria obscura, Ranunculus cf. imitans, and Viola mirabilis. – The same peculiar plant has also been collected by me in Lohja, and our herbarium (H) contains a specimen from Impilahti (Karelia). The species is impossible to identify.
