Notes on Salix caprea

Salix caprea L. (Salicaceae) (Finland, Vantaa, Riipilä, 2000). Image: Harri Harmaja (scanned from dried specimen). This morph (forma or only modification) of the pussy willow superficially slightly resembles the very rare eastern species S. pyrolifolia Ledeb. as the leaves are broadly elliptic and only weakly hairy, and the stipules are conspicuous, semiorbicular or kidney-shaped and fairly persistent. The habitat was a mesotrophic swamp with e.g. Dryopteris cristata, Phragmites australis and Rubus arcticus.
