Kainuu Satellite Ospreys

Kuva: Matti Kemppainen Nine satellite Ospreys have been equipped with new age GPS/GSM loggers by the working group of the Finnish Osprey foundation (Vesa Hyyryläinen and Heljä Pylvänäinen) in Kainuu region in the middle of Finland during 2011–2016. The transmitters are powered by a solar panel and weigh under 30 grams. Satellite transmitters reveal detailed information on the migration routes, wintering grounds and territory use of individuals in their breeding areas. The satellite monitoring Ospreys are part of a larger Osprey research project covering the whole Kainuu area, carried out by Biologist Vesa Hyyryläinen in cooperation with Heljä Pylvänäinen. The Finnish Museum of Natural History is an important collaborator in Kainuu tracking studies.

The main cooperation partners of the Kainuu project are Metsähallitus, ABO Wind, Sisärakenne Kukkola Oy and PaltamoPandion.

Eikka ja Vesa Hyyryläinen. Kuva: Juhani Koivu Eikka map

In the summer of 2011, a new Osprey was added to the satellite-monitoring project started in 2001 and headed by the Osprey Foundation and the Finnish Museum of Natural History. On 2 July 2011, the working group of the Osprey Foundation, comprising Vesa Hyyryläinen, Juhani Koivu, Harri Koskinen, and Heljä Pylvänäinen, fitted a male Osprey in Paltamo with a 30-gram GPS Argos satellite transmitter that runs on a solar panel. The Osprey was named Eikka after the most famous poet in Finland Eino Leino, who was born in Paltamo. Eikka the Osprey was the first tracking Osprey in Kainuu area. In the past, the same kind of transmitter has been used to monitor the movements of Ospreys Pete and Jukka. Vesa Hyyryläinen ringed Eikka with an aluminium ring M-58631 to his right leg and a red plastic ring with a white inscription FA to his left leg. The satellite monitoring of Eikka the Osprey is part of a larger Osprey research project covering the whole Kainuu area, carried out by Biologist Vesa Hyyryläinen in cooperation with Heljä Pylvänäinen. Unfortunately, Eikka the Osprey died in late September in Ukraine near the town Tserkasy after a ten-day migration. Eikka had been found killed near the village of Irdyn. Local biologist Dr Maxim Gavrilyuk told us that he received his information on the event by one of his students, who found Eikka’s carcass, removed the transmitter, and brought it to Dr Gavrilyuk. Later on we got the transmitter back. The cooperation partners of Satellite Osprey Eikka are Sisärakenne Kukkola Oy, E.ON, Paltamon Osuuspankki and Kainuun Sanomat.
