Satellite Osprey Jaska

Male satellite Osprey Jaska was captured by the working group of Osprey Foundation in Kainuu region in the middle of Finland in the summer of 2014. The new age GPS-GSM logger was fitted at the same time. Two weeks earlier a female nestling (called Onerva) of the same nest has got its own logger.

Male Osprey Jaska was ringed as a nestling 25 July 2011 only 23 kilometers southeast from his nest. Jaska had one nestling in the summer of 2014.

Jaska arrived at his breeding area in the afternoon.

29 April 2016

After last positioning Jaska ´s moved 600 km northward. Last evening he was linking in northern Belarus at the lake Vozera. Jaska is about 1,000 km south of his breeding area in Finland.

26 April 2016

Jaska has moved slowly  northward and he is fishing and taking a break in the lowland of Ukraine about 70 west of the capital Kiev at the river Bilka. Jaska is now 1570 km south of his breeding area in Finland.

20-23 April 2016

On 20 April Jaska the Osprey stayed at the river Koca in Turkey and spent there the next two days by fishing and resting. Jaska continued his migration towards north in the morning 22 April, spent the night near the famous Bulgarian city Varna and was flying northward in Romania in the morning 23 April.

18-19 April 2016

Jaska the Osprey continued his spring migration towards northeast. Within two days he flew forward 195 km and stayed overnight at a river Çine Çayi  in west Turkey about 3,000 km south of his breeding area.

16-17 April 2016

16 April Jaska moved about 500 km northeast across the Mediterranean Sea and spent the night in Gavdos  island. After a night nap Jaska decided to continue his spring migration early in the morning. During the day he flew 300 km NE and settled down in a small isle Katergaris in the southern part of the Aegean Sea.

10-15 April 2016

Within next six days Jaska the Osprey moved 2,000 km northward across the Sahara desert. In the afternoon 15 April he arrived at the seashore of Libya and spent the night near Qaminis.

5-9 April 2016

On 8 April Jaska the Osprey stayed overnight in the southern edge of Sahara in Chad. Early in the morning on 9 April he suddenly turned his course to NW. During next week he has to fly some 2.000 km over the very dry desert of Sahara. Jaska has now flown a little bit under than one third of his spring migration journey.

4 April 2016

Jaska continued his migration towards north-east in the morning 4 April. During the day he flew 576 km and spent the night in east Cameroon.

3 April 2016

Jaska started his spring migration early in the morning and flew 215 km north-east during the day following quite closely his autumn migration route. He spent the night in the province of Wele-Nzas in Equatorial Guinea.

During the last two days Jaska has moved slowly SW in southern Chad.

4-10 October 2015

During the last week Jaska moved over 2000 km SSW across the Sahara desert, via Sudan and arrived at Chad on 7 October. In the morning 10 October he´s fishing in Salamat area. Jaska is now 6,000 km south of his breeding area.

2-3 October 2015

On 2 October Jaska flew over the Mediterranean and arrived at the coast of Egypt late in the evening. After taking a short nap in the delta of River Nile, Jaska decided to continue his autumn migration to the south very early in the morning. At noon on 3 October he was flying SSW in the desert of Sahara. Jaska´s now about 4000 km south of his breeding area.

Jaska the Osprey has moved slowly southward in Turkey. Last night he spent in a highland near Ilica.

28 September 2015

After two weeks break in Ukraine, Jaska decided to continue his autumn migration southward in the morning. During the day the Osprey flew about 700 km via Moldova and Romania and over the Black Sea. Late in the evening he was flying SW over the sea very near Bulgarian town Sozopol.

14-16 September 2015

Jaska is still in Ukraine. It´s taking a brake and fishing at a river Bug about 1800 km south of his breeding area.

10-13 September 2015

Jaska moved slowly southeast and it is fishing and taking a break in the lowland of Ukraine about 200 km southwest of the capital Kiev. Jaska is now 1,750 km south of his breeding area in Finland.

9 September 2015

Jaksa the Osprey flew 509 km southward and arrived the western part of Ukraine in the afternoon. Jaska stayed overnight in a beautiful woodland near Kostopol city.

8 September 2015

Jaska moved 630 km southward and spent the night in Lithuania ashore of Lake Aimajas.

7 September 2015

Jaska spent the night 5 km southeast of his nest and started autumn migration early in the morning. During the day, Jaska flew 417 km south and stayed overnight in Lake Kivijärvi in southern Finland.

Jaska arrived at his nest.

30 April - 6 May 2015

For the next days Jaska flew northeast via Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria. He was fishing and resting at River Danube on 30 April. Jaska the Osprey stayed overnight in the middle of Moldova on 3 May after which he has been flying north. In the afternoon 6 May he was very near the Russian border in Belarus.

22-29 April 2015

The night 23-24 April Jaska stayed in the north coast of Libya near the capital Tripoli. Early in the morning 24 April he woke up and flew during the day northward about 500 km over the Mediterranean. Jaska took a break in estuary of the river Irminio in the southern part of Sicily. For the last days he has been flying to the norhteast and in the morning 29 April he was linging near the lake Ohrid in Macedonia.

14-21 April 2015

In the morning 15 April Jaska turned to the west. Within next days Jaska flew throughout Chad and the northern part of Niger to the norhtwest. In the afternoon 20 April Jaska arrived at the southeast part of Algeria. He spent whole the day and the night in the valley (”wadi”) of Tafassasset river by fishing and resting. Early in the morning Jaska continued his spring migration. At 11 o´clock (21 April) he was flying to the north in Libya.

8-13 April 2015

In the afternoon 13 April Jaska was approaching the southern edge of Sahara in Chad. During next week he has to fly some 2,000 km over the very dry desert of Sahara. Jaska has now flown nearly one quarter of his spring migration route.

6-7 April 2015

Jaska started his spring migration early in the morning and flew 195 km north-east during the day following quite closely his autumn migration route. He spent the night in the province of Wele-Nzas in Equatorial Guinea.

Jaska continued his migration towards north-east in the morning 4 April. By noon he was approaching Cameroon's southern border.

Jaska lingers in Gabon estuary near the Capital Libreville. The Osprey is now 7320 km south of his breeding area in Finland. We´re quite sure, it´ll overwinter in the area.

Jaska kept on the autumn migration to the south. It arrived at Gabon 3.11.

20-29 Oct 2014

Jaska flew SW about 80 km per day and arrived at Cameroon.

14-19 Oct 2014

Jaska is flying about 80 km per day in the area of Chad.

10-14 Oct 2014

During the next 5 days Jaska the Osprey flew about 1600 km SSW in the desert of Sahara. The osprey arrived at the middle of Chad 14 October.

8-9 Oct 2014

Jaska the Osprey flew southward about 300 km. After a half day break in the desert, it was fishing at the Siwa Oasis in Egypt.

7 Oct 2014

Jaska the Osprey stayed overnight in the famous Greek island Khios. Early in the morning it woke up and flew nearly 800 km southward during the day. The Osprey travelled to the south throughout the beautiful archipelago of Aegean Sea and in the afternoon it was in the Crete Island. Over there Jaska decided to continue the migration. During the next evening and the night it flew over the Mediterranean. Very early in the morning 8 October (2.30 am) the Osprey arrived the coast of Libya and took a short nap there.

6 Oct 2014

Jaska woke up early in the morning and flew about 350 km southward. In the afternoon, the Osprey arrived at Chios – the famous island of Greece – and took a brake there in the northeastern part of the island. Jaska is now 2900 km south of his breeding area in Finland.

5 Oct 2014

Jaska flew 460 km southward via Bulgaria and stayed overnight in the western part of Turkey between Tayakadin and Abalar.

4 Oct 2014

After two weeks break in Ukraine, Jaska decided to continue his autumn migration to the south in the morning. During the day the Osprey flew about 400 km via Moldova and Romania. It took a night brake in Romania 160 km northeast from the capital Bucharest.

30 September 2014

Jaska still lingers in Vinnytsia region, Ukraine, by fishing in the River Lyadova.

18-24 September 2014

Jaska has slowly moved to the southeast and it is fishing and taking a break in the lowland of Ukraine about 250 km southwest of the capital Kiev, in the region of Vinnytska. Jaska is now 1,750 km south of his breeding area in Finland.

17 September 2014

Early in the morning the satellite Osprey Jaska arrived the western part of Ukraine.

14-16 September 2014

Jaska moved about 400 km per day straight southward. It spent the nights in Latvia, Lithuania and in the middle of Belarus.

13 September 2014

Jaska spent the night 5 km south of his nest and started autumn migration early in the morning. During the day, Jaska flew about 450 km south and stayed overnight in Verla in southern Finland.
